英語でのアーティストトークの前に、英単語や少し難しい表現をみなさんと共有してからショートアニメーションを鑑賞します。その後のアーティストトークではイスラム文化の観点より、芸術作品を制作すること、またイスラムの芸術について英語と日本語を交えて話します。お茶とお菓子を囲んでの小さな座談会です。ぜひご参加ください。

Rümeysa is an artist-driven to explore the themes of love, belonging and identity through the lens of Islamic spirituality. She uses animation and illustration as her medium.

Rümeysa graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam with an animation major. She won first prize in the bachelor research award with her thesis ‘Stories on Hold.’ After several years working in the creative industry, she started her master’s degree at the Graduate School of Manga at Kyoto Seika University.

呼吸は生命の働きのひとつです。しかし、生命全体を象徴するものでもあります。呼吸は周期的で、人間は他の動物と同様に誕生、成長、死のサイクルを経験します。しかし、人間は呼吸を「コントロール」したり「止める」こともできます。また「深く」呼吸したり、呼吸に「集中」したりします。生命の他の側面と同じように、呼吸もまた自然発生的でありながら、私たちがより積極的にかかわることができる側面を持っているといえます。
 
呼吸とより積極的なかかわりを持つことで、私たちは何を得ることができるでしょう？​​呼吸は人間だけでなく、他の生命の形とどのようにつながっているのでしょうか？

Breathing is one of many life functions. But it can also symbolize life as a whole. Breathing is cyclical, and humans go through the cycles of birth, maturation, and death that are common to the other animals. Yet, humans can also “control” or “hold” their breath; they can “take deep” breaths and even “focus on” their breathing. Like many other aspects of human life, breathing too seems both completely spontaneous and yet has some aspect that we can become more active toward.
 
What can we gain from having a more active relationship toward our breathing?
How does breathing connect us, not only to other human beings, but also other forms of life?

“Perspective” originally referred to a technique in painting that would allow the viewer to view the canvas as if they were looking through a window onto a scene. Today, “perspective” refers both to one’s personal “point of view,” or way of thinking about things, and to the capacity to view things in their true relations. We could say that “perspective” deals with the relationship between the objective and the subjective, which raises many interesting questions for philosophy.

今日の「アート」とはどのようなことを言いますか。アートとは、なにがどこにあるのでしょうか。アートと呼ばれるものには作品、アーティストそして鑑賞者という３つの欠かせない要素があります。テクノロジーの分野も同様に装置があり、作り手、利用者がいます。日々の暮らしの中で、足に履く靴から手に持っているスマホまで絶えず技術にふれています。けれども、アートと向きあうとき、その「アート」を理解するのはとても難しいように思います。
 
一部の作品を「アートワーク」と呼ぶのはなぜでしょうか。機器メーカーとアーティストの違いはなんですか？ 利用者ではなく、アートの鑑賞者である私たちはどこにいるのでしょう? それとも、このような分類に意味の違いはないのでしょうか。

Why, what, and where is “art” today?
There seem to be three key ingredients for art: the artwork, the artist, and the audience.
Similar ingredients are necessary for technology: gadgets, makers, and users. In everyday life, we constantly interact with technology, from the shoes on our feet to the smartphones in our hands; but it is much harder to recognize when we interact with art.
 
Why are some products called “artworks”? What is the difference between a gadget-maker and an artist? Where are we, not users, but an audience to art? Or: is there no meaningful difference between these categories?

京都堀川で、『Our Words, Our Songs』 と題してワークショップと展覧会を開催しました。
郵便物の持つ魅力、写真が伝えるそれぞれの土地の光、そしてことばを発するおもしろさについての展示です。
 
ワークショップでは、ABCが印刷された紙にそれぞれ好きな言葉を書きます。
そして集まったことばをつないで詩を作りました。
さまざまな言語が飛び交い、それぞれの物語を読みあっていると世界を旅しているように感じました。
 
Our Words, Our Songs was born out of the collaborative ABC Mail Project created by Kano　Ikegami, artist Yuko Kanamori, and photographer Toshie Kusamoto. On a sheet of paper, participants wrote down words for each letter of the alphabet. We weave the words together in the form of a poem. We use the words of others to compose a song – and create a polyphonic body of work.

Our Words, Our Songs was born out of the collaborative ABC Mail Project created by Kano　Ikegami, artist Yuko Kanamori, and photographer Toshie Kusamoto. On a postcard, participants wrote down words for each letter of the alphabet and sent it back to us via snail mail. Kano takes the words from an individual’s postcard and weaves them together in the form of a poem. Come join us as we use the words of others to compose a song – and create a polyphonic body of work.

Kano Ikegami 

Organizer. Aims to bring words to life. Her workshops touch upon a variety of meaningful topics including lifestyle, art, and society. She is the director of an unconventional English school called  Eigo Kyoshitsu. 

Yuko Kanamori 

Artist. Through various poetic expressions, Yuko makes mixed media objects by hand out of paper and thread. Her works cover the span of visual installations, performances, and delicate pieces whose motifs are books and snail mail.
 
Toshie Kusamoto 

Photographer. She took photos of her hometown, Beppu, and workshops of dancers and people with disabilities, where various bodies cross. Since the Great East Japan Earthquake, she has been photographing the life of a young boy in Onagawa, Miyagi.

Authenticity, “being true to oneself,” is a quality valued in modern society. Of course, authenticity is important in my relationship to myself, but it is also valued in our relationships with others. We enjoy the company of honest people who have stable relationships with themselves. This inner stability seems to express itself as outer stability.

Why is authenticity difficult to realize? How can authenticity be achieved? Why do you think authenticity is so important? Are there other qualities or ideals that are more important than authenticity?

「自分らしさ」　　

Authenticity  信憑性がある。本物である。

自分らしさ、「自分に正直であること」は現代社会において必要だと言われています。自分らしさは、自分自身と向き合う場合に大切ですが、他の人との関わりにおいても意味があるとされています。自分自身と安定した関係性を築いてい誠実な人と過ごすのは楽しいものです。この内面の安定は外面にも影響しているように思います。

なぜ自分らしくあるのは難しいのでしょう？どうすれば自分らしくいられるでしょう。なぜ自分らしさは大切なのでしょうか。自分らしさよりも大切な要素や理想とする形はあるでしょうか。
